Reading & Math
Instruction That Meets Your Child Where They Are
Still Waters Learning provides explicit, structured instruction in reading and math, with small groups, thoughtful assessment, and instruction designed around what each child is ready to learn next.
Reading instruction
Building Strong, Confident Readers
Reading instruction at Still Waters Learning is explicit and structured, grounded in the science of reading and delivered in small groups that allow instruction to be responsive to students' needs.
Instruction builds the skills children need to become capable, confident readers, from understanding how sounds and letters work together to reading fluently, building vocabulary, understanding increasingly complex words, and making meaning from text. My literacy training through the Institute for Multi-Sensory Education (IMSE) includes Orton-Gillingham, reading intervention, and Morphology training. Together, these structured literacy approaches support instruction ranging from foundational decoding and spelling to the study of meaningful word parts that strengthen vocabulary, spelling, and comprehension.
The goal isn't simply to complete a reading level. It's to give each child the skills to become a stronger, more independent reader.
Virtual reading practice
Keep the Momentum Going
Virtual Reading Practice is an optional add-on for students currently enrolled in the in-person Reading program. It offers additional practice sessions through KoalaGo to reinforce skills between weekly group meetings.
A Virtual Classroom Kids Enjoy
Sessions take place in my KoalaGo classroom, where students can see and interact in a live, engaging virtual environment. KoalaGo adds a private virtual playground that I can customize to fit the student's current learning focus.
Virtual Reading Practice is designed to complement the in-person Reading program and is available only to students currently enrolled in that program.
Math instruction
Building Number Sense and Mathematical Confidence
Math instruction at Still Waters Learning goes beyond memorizing procedures. The goal is genuine understanding so children can think flexibly, solve problems, and feel capable.
Instruction uses a concrete-pictorial-abstract approach, helping students move from hands-on materials, to visual models, and finally to numbers and symbols. Combined with explicit instruction, guided practice, and regular review, this approach helps children understand not only how to solve a problem, but why the math works. Curriculum is selected thoughtfully for each instructional group, taking into account student needs, program goals, and the preferences of enrolled homeschool families.
The goal is not simply to get the right answer. It's to understand the math well enough to reason, solve problems, and move forward with confidence.
