Meet Jenny
Experienced. Thoughtful. Genuinely Invested.
Long before I became a classroom teacher, I was a homeschool mom with a child who struggled to learn to read. I loved homeschooling, but I didn't know how to give my daughter the help she needed. I felt like I was letting her down, and eventually I made the difficult decision to enroll my children in a traditional school. Years later, after becoming a credentialed elementary teacher, I understood that experience very differently. I had learned how children develop foundational reading and math skills, but I had also seen how difficult it can be to meet every child's individual needs within a busy classroom. I often wished I had more time with students who needed focused instruction, additional practice, or simply a different pace and approach. I also found my way back to homeschooling and rediscovered how much I loved it. Once we were past the hurdle of learning to read, something changed: instead of learning to read, we could read to learn. That's when so much of the adventure of homeschooling opened up. I like the work. I like the kids. And Still Waters Learning gives me the opportunity to do the kind of teaching I especially enjoy: working closely with children, figuring out what is getting in the way, and helping them build the skills and confidence to move forward. I want homeschool parents to have the kind of support I once needed, and I want families with children in traditional classrooms to have access to additional academic support that complements and reinforces the work their child's teacher is already doing. I believe that when parents, teachers, and students work together, we create more opportunities for children to succeed and grow into confident, independent, lifelong learners.
"Every child deserves instruction that fits them — not the other way around."
The learning environment
A Welcoming Place to Learn
Still Waters Learning operates from a dedicated instructional area in Jenny's home in Eureka, California. It's a comfortable, well-organized small-group learning space designed for focused instruction in a relaxed, home-based setting.
Learning here is active and engaging. Sessions include games, conversation, manipulatives, chants, practice, movement, and laughter.
Children feel safe making mistakes, asking questions, practicing difficult skills, and trying again. That's not just a nice idea, it's how real learning happens.
The atmosphere is calm and encouraging. It's a place where children can focus, take risks, and build real skills without pressure or performance anxiety.
Teaching philosophy
Meet Them Where They Are. Build What Comes Next.
Assessment-informed instruction
We start by getting to know your child, not to label them, but to understand them. Instruction is built on what each child actually knows and needs right now.
Explicit and structured
Skills are taught directly and systematically. Concepts are introduced clearly, practiced thoroughly, and built upon intentionally to create more opportunities to succeed and grow as learners.
Partnership with parents
Parents are their child's primary teacher. Still Waters Learning supports that role, through instruction, communication, and practical help for learning at home.
Let's Connect
Tell me a little about your child, what you're looking for, and where learning has become challenging. I'll follow up so we can talk about your child's needs and whether Still Waters Learning may be a good fit for your family.
